Manhole cover theft safety risk

Drivers are being warned to take extra care after a spate of manhole and gully cover thefts in a County Durham town.

In the past few days, 66 covers have been stolen from roads in Darlington and a minor accident was caused when a car drove into an uncovered gully.

Darlington Council said many of the covers have been stolen at night making it even more hazardous for drivers.

It is believed they have been stolen for scrap metal and they will be replaced with non-metal covers.

David Lyonette, Darlington Council's cabinet member for transport, said: "These thieves have no consideration for people's safety.

"I would urge drivers to be extra vigilant and to be aware that open manholes may be temporarily marked by cones."
